Functional diarrhoea (Rome IV)

Functional diarrhoea is recurrent loose stools without predominant pain or bloating. Exclude bile acid diarrhoea, microscopic colitis, coeliac disease and other causes first. The Rome IV criteria are summarised here in our own words, and are a guide to a positive diagnosis alongside appropriate investigation. See the Rome Foundation for the original criteria.
