Functional heartburn (Rome IV)

Functional heartburn is heartburn that does not respond to acid suppression, with normal acid exposure and no association between symptoms and reflux on pH-impedance monitoring. The Rome IV criteria are summarised here in our own words, and are a guide to a positive diagnosis alongside appropriate investigation. See the Rome Foundation for the original criteria.
